King Charles sent a clear message following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain: they remain private citizens and will not undertake official royal duties. Their return to the country does not mean a return to the Royal Family as working royals.
At the King’s direction, the Lord Chamberlain sent an official letter to selected senior figures across government, the military and the Lord Lieutenancies, confirming that there has been no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The official letter reiterates that, since January 2020, the couple have ceased carrying out official duties on behalf of the Sovereign and are not working members of the Royal Family.
Their HRH styles remain in abeyance and are not used. Their charitable activities are considered private and are carried out solely in their personal capacity.
Harry and Meghan’s office will continue to operate separately from the Royal Household, while any matters relating to their security should be directed to the relevant authorities.
The letter was sent following the couple’s return to Britain for an extended stay, after a number of requests for clarification regarding their status.
While the letter confirms that there has been no change to their official status, Prince Harry was also seen publicly in London following his return, visiting Tower Bridge Studios in central London.
